Radio buttons

Use radio buttons when users must pick one clear, mutually exclusive option — and write each option in a way that’s quick to understand and easy to compare.

Writing guidelines

Options

Radio button options should be:

  • Short and scannable
  • Parallel in structure (start each option the same way)
  • Written in positive terms (what the user does want)

Avoid:

  • Full sentences
  • Punctuation at the end of options
  • Negative phrasing (e.g., Don’t notify me)

Introductory labels and text

Start radio groups with a short, clear label or question, depending on context.
You can optionally add supporting body text underneath to clarify intent or provide guidance.

  • Use sentence case
  • Don’t use end punctuation unless the label is a question
  • If using body text, write it as a full sentence and include punctuation
  • Don’t state “Choose only one” — that’s implied by the UI
